Day #32 I'd Rather Have Jesus

Today, Alexis and I sat talking to a friend at church about the hymn, "I'd Rather Have Jesus". The history of the song is not only amazing in that it's a story of a twenty three year old young man writing music to a poem, but because this whole song was truly an expression of George Beverly Shea's commitment to the Lord.

This hymn became special to our family because of our dear friend in Georgia who sings this song as a real life testimony of his own life. When his deep voice rings through the small church, we all feel compelled to sing the same song in our own heart...would we really rather have Jesus than anything?

I'd Rather Have Jesus

I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold,
I'd rather be His than have riches untold;
I'd rather have Jesus than houses or lands,
I'd rather be led by His nail-pierced hand
Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin's dread sway;
I'd rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.

I'd rather have Jesus than men's applause,
I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I'd rather have Jesus than worldwide fame,
I'd rather be true to His holy name
Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin's dread sway;
I'd rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.

He's fairer than lilies of rarest bloom,
He's sweeter than honey from out the comb;
He's all that my hungering spirit needs,
I'd rather have Jesus and let Him lead
Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin's dread sway;
I'd rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.
